Committees at SCLC
The Property Committee exists to bring God into the lives of people in various ways through equipping the saints for ministry (Ephesians 4:12) in the specific area of property owned by the congregation. The Property Committee “equips the saints” in collaboration with the pastors, staff and ministry volunteers, as well as with other Committees and the Church Council.
The Property Committee will regularly assess the immediate and long-term needs of the property owned by the congregation and work to maintain the property so that it can continue to be used for the mission and ministry of the congregation.
These responsibilities and duties of the Property Committee will include but are not limited to:
- Regular walk-throughs of the church and church property, noting any issues that may need to be addressed.
- Oversee lawn and landscaping care and maintenance at the church
- Playground and parking lot care and maintenance at the church
- Arrange for snow removal at the church
- Maintenance of appliances, water heater, furnace, boiler and/or water softener in the church and the parsonage
- Maintenance and upkeep of the church building, outbuildings and vehicles, including normal details such as cleaning of the church, replacing light bulbs, interior painting, plumbing issues, door locks (key maintenance), minor repairs, etc.
- Maintain a checklist of items needing repair
- Secure multiple bids for projects that need to be done
- Empower other lay people to independently complete the tasks of the Committee
- Present financial needs to be considered when Financial Mission Planning for the congregation
In order to accomplish this, this Committee will meet as needed. Included in these meetings will be a time for the members of this Committee to learn and grow in their own faith. Members will be appointed by the Church Council and may be reappointed yearly.
The Outreach Committee is dedicated to expanding our congregation’s vision for mission- locally, nationally, and globally. Our goal is to connect our faith community with opportunities to serve, support, and build relationships that reflect God’s love in action.
Through this work, the Outreach committee seeks to equip and inspire our faith community to use their gifts, grow in faith, and serve to the glory of God.
To accomplish this, the Outreach Committee will:
- Stay informed about the work of other organizations in our community and share this knowledge with the congregation
- Identify and promote opportunities to support community needs, such as campus ministry, programs for children, feeding ministries, services for the aging population, and mental health awareness.
- Collaborate with other church members to educate the congregation about mission opportunities and encourage engagement.
- Facilitate ways for our church to support organizations through financial contributions, donations of needed items, and hands-on service projects, partnering with the Ministry of the Month team.
To accomplish this, the Outreach Committee will meet as needed, plus additional time for planning and supporting events.
The Education Committee at South Canyon Lutheran Church exists to bring God into the lives of people in various ways through equipping the saints for ministry (Ephesians 4:12) in the specific area of Christian education. The Education Committee “equips the saints” in collaboration with the Pastor, Children Youth and Family Director, other staff and ministry volunteers, as well as with other Committees and the Church Council.
The Education Committee will regularly assess the educational needs and interests of children, adults and families and work hand in hand with all ages to provide instruction, materials and assistance to assist members of SCLC and the community at large with their faith development.
These experiences, opportunities and/or responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Provide for and oversee Spark Sundays, Whirly Wednesdays, Vacation Bible School, Confirmation, 6-8th Grade Faith Formation, and other educational opportunities as necessary, including planning and scheduling of such opportunities.
- Provide for opportunities of adult learning
- Assist with deciding upon curriculum for the Christian education opportunities as necessary.
- Assist with recruiting people to teach, assist, and substitute as needed for Christian education ministries.
- Assist in training of volunteers.
- Assist in getting materials and supplies ready for teachers as needed.
- Assist in putting together a discipline policy and enabling others to handle discipline issues, including having one person available at Christian Education opportunities to handle discipline issues.
- Assist with Milestone Ministry as needed.
In order to accomplish this, this Committee will meet regularly. Included in these meetings will be a time for the members of this Committee to learn and grow in their own faith. Members will be appointed by the Church Council and may be reappointed yearly.
The Youth Committee exists to bring God into the lives of people in various ways through equipping the saints for ministry (Ephesians 4:12) in the specific areas of youth ministry. For this committee, “youth” is defined as children of God in grades 6 – 12. They do not need to be members of this congregation. All youth of the community in this grade range are invited to participate in the SCLC Middle School and High School Community Youth Groups. The Youth Committee “equips the saints” in collaboration with the Pastor, Children Youth and Family Director, other staff and ministry volunteers, as well as with other Committees and the Church Council.
The Youth Committee will be comprised of adults and youth. They will be the ‘listeners’ in the community to learn about the hopes, concerns and needs of youth so they can help to educate the congregation and advocate for the youth. They will work to plan and provide experiences and opportunities which encourage youth to continue to develop their relationships with God and with one another as well as challenging them in responding to God’s call to serve in their communities and the world.
These experiences, opportunities and/or responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Assist in planning and implementing regular gathering times for the middle school group and high school group which will include relationship building and faith building activities
- Assist in planning and implementing occasional combined gathering times for Middle School and High School Youth.
- Assist in planning and implementing occasional trips outside of the community.
- Assist with communicating with the youth through written word, texts, emails and phone calls, including reminders for various functions.
- Assist with planning, preparing and running various fundraisers as needed.
To accomplish this, this Committee will meet regularly. Included in these meetings will be a time for the members of this Committee to learn and grow in their own faith. Members will be affirmed by the Church Council. Members may serve more than one year consecutively.
The Fellowship Committee strengthens the life of the church by fostering meaningful relationships, creating welcoming spaces, and offering opportunities for connection and spiritual growth. Through intentional gatherings and acts of hospitality, the committee cultivates a sense of belonging within the body of Christ.
The Fellowship Committee’s purpose is o build deeper relationships and a stronger community by planning activities that encourage fellowship, nurture faith, and help individuals feel supported, valued, and connected to the church family.
The responsibilities of the Fellowship Committee include but are not limited to:
- Plan and host fellowship events such as meals, celebrations, seasonal gatherings, and church-wide activities.
- Promote an atmosphere of welcome for members, visitors, and newcomers.
- Support ongoing relational ministry, including small-group connection and intergenerational activities.
- Encourage spiritual growth by integrating faith-centered elements into fellowship activities when appropriate.
- Coordinate volunteers for event preparation, hospitality, and clean-up.
- Manage event logistics, including communication, supplies, budgeting, and scheduling.
- Collaborate with other committees and ministries for shared initiatives
- Foster a variety of intergenerational and inclusive connections.
To accomplish this, the Fellowship Committee will meet monthly or every other month as needed, plus additional time for planning and supporting events.
The Personnel Committee exists to support the mission of the South Canyon Lutheran Church by providing oversight, care, and guidance for all staff. This committee ensures that employment practices are fair, consistent, and aligned with the SCLC’s values and policies.
The responsibilities of the Personnel Committee include but are not limited to:
- Provide staff support and care as needed by providing confidential support and a channel for addressing concerns, conflicts, or grievances
- Assist in hiring and staffing, including:
- Assisting in developing job descriptions
- Lead or support the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring process
- Recommend candidates to the Congregation Council for approval
- Work with leadership on performance improvement plans if needed
- Develop, review, and update personnel policies and Personnel Handbook
- Ensure compliance with applicable labor laws and ethical standards
- Maintain confidentiality in all personnel matters
- Assist in mediating disputes involving staff
- Ensure due process and fairness
- Anticipate future staffing needs
To accomplish this, the Personnel Committee will consist of three lay members, the Office Administrator and the Senior Pastor. The Committee meets as needed.
